To all my singers, this is for you! Have you ever experienced - TopicsExpress

To all my singers, this is for you! Have you ever experienced someone on stage who is completely out of breath for the duration of their performance? I know I have and it is sometimes very very painful to watch. It almost makes me feel like I am out of breath as well! The truth is, breathing is one of those important components that a lot of singers do not take time to develop properly. Breathing is to singing as gas is to a car. If we do not have a good amount of gas in our cars, we will surly run out. Below I have attached a picture for those who need a visual. Here are a couple of tips that help me and my vocal students as well. 1. When breathing in, make sure your shoulders do not go up and that your stomach pushes out. If our breath goes right to our chest, then we have no way of using that breath to support our diaphragm. 2. Make sure you are relaxed! A tense singer is painful to watch. (yikes!) 3. When practicing this exercise for the first time, make sure you are breathing in through a straw to get the breath exactly where it needs to go, which is to the diaphragm. Make a O shape with your mouth and breath in. Feel your rib cage expand and lift, and feel your stomach expand outward. If you cant achieve this while standing initially, try laying on your back and breath in following the directions stated above. Then come back to your standing position and try again. 4. Lastly, try to time yourself. When you exhale, make a sssss sound and see how long you can go. Keep on trying, build those lungs up, and work your way into a more relaxed, controlled way of singing! I taught this to one of my students and she says that she is able to apply this to her breathing in swimming as well! Better breathing produces better confidence! Better confidence produces better singing!
