To all my young readers - Ive noticed, Indian youngsters aged 19-20 usually experience a strong shift in priority. Promptly a job becomes an ultimate goal for us. Mindless chattering are replaced by sensible(?) career opportunity discussions and umpteen number of TAT’s (CAT,MAT,SAT…try A to Z). Things get interesting for Engineering students - where weve companies visiting to our campus and we want badly to resemble those visiting HR professionals with shining suits and boots and an exhibition of rarest English vocabularies. Ive noticed students change a lot at this phase of life. Friends become foes, bestys become competitors. The only thing that matters is an appointment letter – preferably from an MNC. We all want to enact that “Look Mom! I got the job” scene from Bollywood. Truth is - getting a job isnt bad. Your family/relatives take you more seriously. You can afford those costly 2000 bucks dinners, the movie @ the iMax and visiting malls is not only about window shopping any more. But look at the irony. When you work for a few years and you meet an old friend by chance – you talk only about those mindless friend hours, those silly fun you had and never about that piece of paper which earned you a fat paycheck. There is nothing wrong to have a focus on your career – but it’s only a part of your life. So are your family, your friends, your hobbies and the things you love to do. Don’t compromise on that. Try balancing out - first movie outing with friends, first crush, first walk in the rain, first cigarette, first college bunk and first kiss with the first job.
