To all of my friends that graduated from Dallas Theological Seminary (DTS) today, CONGRATS! I know first hand that what you accomplished wasnt easy. But I have some bad news for you...as hard as seminary was, ministry is MUCH harder! Now the hard work REALLY begins for you. Every where you look youll find people are lost, hurting, confused, joyless, unwise, hungry for truth, searching, and helpfulness. They need you to bring the light of truth and love into their dark world. They need you to find them in the midst of their mess and lead them out of their darkness and into the marvelous light that only an abiding relationship with Jesus Christ can bring. They are going to wonder if you (and God) will still love them if you (and God) find out how much of a mess they have made of their life much more than if you can accurately describe the three major views on dispensationalism. They wont be impressed that you can translate entire books of the Bible from Greek and Hebrew into English In fact, most of them will think the Bible was originally written in English. They wont care that you were taught by people like Dr. Hannah, Dr Bailey, Howard Hendricks, Dr. Pentecost, J. Scott Horrell, Nathan Holsteen, Glenn Kreider, George M Hillman, and others. They wont even know who those people are. All they will care about is will you (and this God you claim to know) care for them, love them, meet them where they are, and if there is really hope for them in the midst of their darkness. Make no mistake, they will need all of the truth you learned in seminary, they will need to know all about this God that you spent so much time studying. But most of all they will need the one thing that most of us dont like to give up, our time. Lots and lots of our time. Our patience. Our grace. Our love. Our kindness. The good news is God is sufficient to help you do all that He has called you to do. Im looking forward to seeing my Facebook newsfeed filled with all of the great things He is going to use you today. Teach Truth. Love Well.
