To answer an often asked question, the proper format of the show title is CHiPs. There are no periods. In California the public refers to CHP officers as Chippies (just like how in some states State Police officers are called Staties). When Rick Rosner created the show he wanted to call it Chippies but NBC did not like it so he shortened Chippies to CHiPs. NBC loved it and the rest is history. Yes, both Chippies and CHiPs are derivatives of CHP. The last time I shared this info some people got really rude and argumentative and I still dont understand why. I hope it does not happen again.
