To anyone who thinks there is no flood insurance in Canada here is a message from my insurance co. An important message from The Co-operators Our claims team is prepared and available to take your calls 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Contact us at 1-877-682-5246. In response to heavy rain and flooding in your community, we are providing you with the following information to help protect you and your property. Please take the following precautions: 1. Monitor local media for updates, so you can make appropriate arrangements for shelter and if you are located in an area that is prone to mudslides or other hazards, stay abreast of possible evacuation messages from authorities. 2. If you are evacuated, do not enter your home until authorities say it is safe to do so. 3. Keep children and pets away from waterways; channels of small creeks and rivers can fill up quickly and banks may erode resulting in unstable ground. 4. Appliances that may have been flooded pose a risk of shock or fire when turned on. Do not use any appliances, heating, pressure, or sewage system until electrical components have been thoroughly cleaned, dried, and inspected by a qualified electrician. 5. Make your health and safety a priority; floodwater contains micro-organisms that can cause you to become ill, wear proper protection when in flood water. 6. Dispose of any food that has come in contact with floodwater and clean food preparation surfaces. 7. Remove standing water within your property as soon as it is safe to do so. 8. Dry any wet areas thoroughly and remove soaked building materials, including drywall and floor coverings. 9. Look for signs of mould contamination, which can appear within 24 hours of exposure to water and more information on safe cleanup after a flood, visit the CMHC website. 10. The main electrical panel must be cleaned, dried and tested by a qualified electrician to ensure that it is safe. 11. To avoid electrical shock wear rubber boots; keep extension cords out of the water; shut the power off to the flooded area at the breaker box; ask your electrical utility for help if needed. 12. Restock your emergency kits so the supplies will be there when needed. For more information on safe cleanup after flooding, visit the CMHC website.
