To be an undocumented immigrant is to obsess over documents. A driver’s license, for example, is not merely a driver’s license—it proves you exist, that you’re part of a community. A license allows you to drop your kids off to school, go to church, the mall. You can drive yourself to work. I am spending the whole day in Oregon spreading the word on Measure 88, which would grant drivers cards to undocumented Oregonians. With congressional members in Capitol Hill unable to agree on a federal solution to this federal issue of immigration, it’s up to individual states to find safe, practical, and humane ways to help their undocumented residents. cc Causa Oregon Define American
