“To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.” ― Ralph Waldo Emerson Lets face it, when it comes to really knowing yourself, most of us has just taken it for granted that we already “know” ourselves. We tend to accept our subtle conditioning over a lifetime as a reality of who we are are. Unfortunately this is often not the case and in some ways we are like the prize hidden at the bottom of the cereal box. From birth we are raised in our parents environment, in their values, principals and patterns. We then become a part of this intricate pattern, even if we have never given it a conscious thought or choice. For many this works, the values, the approach learned over time from others serves well. For others it slowly breaks apart and fails to serve us as we move through life. This is the point of conflict. Conflict with what we were taught and what we have realized is making us unhappy, doubtful or unknowing. The point here is that on some level we all go through this and with the proper perspective it can be truly enlightening and healing! There is nothing wrong with curiosity and questioning why we feel certain ways about certain things. My grandmother use to always put flour in a macaroni dish she made. As a child I did not like it, because it tasted pasty. One summer while staying with her I watched her make dinner and saw her dumping flour into the cheese mixture. When I asked her why, she simply said because her mother did so. Being the little chef I was, I asked if next time we could just use more cheese and skip the flour. She obliged and low and behold the dish came out so much better to everyones pleasure! The point is that a certain amount of self questioning and lead to desirable outcomes and shifts in perspective. We only need to have the courage to ask ourselves “why” we are doing something, believing a certain way or responding in a specific manner. Often working through these layers leads us to a more in tune and enlightened perspective about ourself, and who we thing we are. We will always deserve the destinations we arrive at. Choosing the path that leads us there is our responsibility.
