To become a more serious Catholic, if one can be said to do such a thing, one must realize its a terribly lonely and isolating proposition. If you become serious about Catholic marriage, your whole idea of love changes and the likelihood of ever getting married, greatly decreases. God doesnt take second place in the Catholic life, or should not and yet for many, as one quickly realizes, God and the very idea of Catholic identity, is little more than a quaint and distant social construct without much meaning. For those of you who live in strong parishes or who are happily married, you probably cant relate to this. Outside the strong parish and Catholic community, and I will tell you that they are extraordinarily rare, one lives in Sodom or Corinth. It is profanity and blasphemy, it is lewd debauchery, it is fornication and idolatry. It is a tepid sea of faithlessness and ignorance and any attempt to be a light to the contrary is to be a candle in the wind. Outside of the strong parish guided by strong pastors and shepherds, a hellish wind blows constantly and one must often avert their eyes from the world of men and seek Christ alone, lest they lose heart entirely.
