To catch a thief at Bali airport To catch a thief at Bali airport BY BALI DISCOVERY.COM | JUN 22, 2014 Three security guards working at Bali’s Ngurah Rai Airport have been sentenced to four months prison for theft from passengers’ luggage, while another two guards are still undergoing legal proceedings prior to final sentencing. According to NusaBali, the story of the successful conviction traces back to GA 718 flying from Bali to Melbourne on December 29, 2013. On that date, Nursahman entered Gate 8 at the airport carrying small handbag, a backpack and a plastic shopping bag. He was directed to submit his hand luggage for final security screening. Inside Nursahman’s backpack was an envelope containing AUS$3,650 dollars. Manning the security post were five secyrity officers: Indra Fajrin Nasrullah, Sudarji, Putu Fandy Putra Antara, Anak Agung Alit Permana and Kadek Wirtana Yasa. As recorded in the trial, the passenger handed his backpack to Indra, while Sudardji inspected his handbag. In the course of the inspection Indra saw the envelope of money and, through some code arranged beforehand, his colleague Sudarji actively questioned the handbags a contents to distract the man’s attention while the envelope of money was neatly folded away into a glove worn by Indra. Rushing to the waiting plane, Nursaham was unaware of the theft until he inspected his backpack while the flight was enroute to Melbourne when he reported the theft to Garuda cabin crew. It was later learned that in a well-rehearsed scenario, immediately after the theft, Indra removed the glove containing the money and allowed it fall to the floor where it was retrieved by Sudardji who transfered and concealed the money before handing Indra back his glove. Once the plane had taken off, Indra once again took control of the money that he divided up among 6 security guards. Once the plane landed in Melbourne, Nursaham was interviewed by Garuda Ground staff who forwarded a detailed report back to Bali. Subsequent reviews of CCTV footage revealed the modus operandi of the uniformed thieves who were then arrested and handed over to police. The court handed down a sentence of four months to Indra Fajrin Nasrullah, Sudarji and Putu Fandy Putra Antara on Wednesday, June 11, 2014. Indra confessed to the court that there was at least one other occasion in which he stole money from a passenger’s handbag. Prosecutors had asked for six months prison for the men. The two remaining members of the ring of thieves, Anak Agung Alit Permana and Kadek Wirtana Yasa are undergoing a separate trial. Indra took the Australian dollars to a moneychanger in Sanur where he obtained approximately Rp. 30 million. Miserly in sharing the spoil,s he reportedly only gave Putu Fandy $AU150 and Sudardji Rp. 1,670,0000. EAST ASIA
