To erniesremodelingandrepair@yahoogroups Today at 5:16 PM Hi Everybody! Hope all had a wonderful Thanksgiving. I’m up in the Seattle area and have been following our resident craftsman for several years. I do not miss a single message. I am also very jealous of those who have had their coaches renewed by Ernie, mostly the ones that live so close by! My ’03 Diplomat is a bit beyond the need for new flooring and I would be honored to have Ernie take it on – as my coach deserves the very best! Now that the discussion of appointments, deposits, etc. has been brought up – if you don’t mind – I would like to present an idea that I have been stewing about for some time. By the tenor of some of the replies today I would not be too surprised that some have thought the same thing and that more than some will think it is an idea that should be considered. Unfortunately, I am the “idea guy” and that is about it!! It is not my place to even write this out of the clear blue, but today’s money discussion has finally given me the opening that I needed. ERNIE, SOME HOW/SOME WAY SHOULD BE FAIRLY COMPENSATED FOR WHAT HE KNOWS AND THE TIME HE TAKES TO ANSWER QUESTIONS FROM NON-“ERNIE BOUND” CUSTOMERS. These payments should not be a burden on Ernie, but a voluntary method of payment for value received. To me, Ernie is just a bit short of a National Treasure, but after following him for years (plus all of those photos!), we all know he is a true craftsman and perfectionist for all of his customers. There have been many messages asking all sorts of questions of Ernie about their coaches and its flooring - from carpet types, to adhesives, flooring thickness, and on how to deal with their slides. Ernie has answered every single one of them that appear in the Group messages. How many more ask him questions directly to his e-mail address? One thing that is apparent to me . . . Ernie works hard at his craft and his projects. He has the experience and that special something that makes him do his jobs perfectly. His knowledge bank “upstairs” is stuffed full of information – all of which makes that information very valuable. His time even thinking about the correct answer is on his own time, not to mention the time he has to spend sitting down to type out a response -most likely after a hard day of work! How do we know he doesn’t “hunt & peck” a message that might take him a half hour to compose and send?? His time and knowledge is worth something!!! So here we are . . . talking about deposits to keep an appointment. Perfect timing as this has been bothering me for some time. There are a lot of now-fancy ways to make payments to people. Ernie surely shouldn’t have to invoice for his services. I don’t know anything about how he does his transactions. It just seems to me that, with the way many responded today on the idea of a deposit, that ALL OF US could come up with a method to make this idea work!! When my time comes to start this project I really don’t know what I will do. My “idea” right now is to do it myself and hire Ernie to assist via e-mail, photos, etc. BUT only if we come up with a fair compensation that I would gladly pay. I don’t think I would start such a project (maybe the demo!) without a sounding board and a good way out of trouble (think slides here!). I’m also quite sure , now that I know Ernie, that it would be hard to trust someone else to do this work. I also know that it’ll take me roughly $2k to go round trip to Ernie and finding the time, while we’re both still working, would be difficult. We just turned 100k on our Diplomat so we do manage to get out, but Texas is “way down there!”. I remember when Ernie would travel to his jobs!! No better place than Seattle from July 5th to Labor Day!! Thanks for listening and, hopefully understand what has frustrated me. Hopefully Ernie won’t mind more “help” in running his very successful business – what are we up to August/September of what year?? I hope everyone has had a great weekend and that the Seahawks game was as enjoyable to you as it was to me. We are parked at our “special” State park on the Pacific Ocean for 4 nights. Very stormy last night but we woke up to cooler temps, bright sunshine, and a drier beach to roam – until the Apple Cup starts later tonight!! All my best to All!, Gene Howe ’03 Diplomat 40PDT Woodinville, WA WOW, thank you
