To mark the Centenary of the start of World War I, a ceremony will take place on the Flag Market to commemorate this important moment in time. All lights in Lancastria House, Guild Hall, Town Hall and Harris Museum & Art Gallery will be switched off with the exception of two porch lights at the front and back entrances of the Town Hall as a mark of respect. Surrounding street lights will also be temporarily switched off for the ceremony, which will see a choreographed candlelit vigil by volunteers take place against the backdrop of the newly refurbished Cenotaph. This will be followed by World War I readings of letters and poetry. Almost 2,000 candles will be placed - one for every soldier named on the Roll of Honour. Everyone welcome.
