To me, Columbus Day is not a celebration of the man, rather a celebration of my European ancestors escaping religious persecution by coming to America. Granted, the facts that some cite are in direct conflict with the historical teachings about Columbus - but that was over 500 years ago, when times were quite different. Yes, Native Americans were displaced, not by me, but they were. Does that mean I should not celebrate my ancestors settling in North America? When can we stop being expected to pay for the sins of our relatives, who lived centuries ago? And, ironically, Columbus did not settle in what is considered the USA - the pilgrims did.
