To my friends abroad, news from Brazil: Medical doctors became a commodity. By presidential decree, US $ 1,500,000 is to be sent to Cuban government every year in exchange for their professionals. Cuban doctors are subject to the labour laws of their country while working here. Furthermore, in order to have a Cuban medical degree, one must be an active leftist, appointed by Party nomination. There is no other criteria for one to join Cuban Medical School. They are all supposed to leave Brazil at the conclusion of the deal; however, according to the Brazilian Constitution, being parent to a Brazilian is a protection against deportation. Local population, including polititians and most of the healthcare professionals, do not seem to grasp the long term consequences of these measures.
