To the Person Who Surrendered Clutch: You were moving. You didnt say why. You didnt really explain why Clutch couldnt come with you. You just brought him in...after 7 years. Huskies are not like Labs. They dont bond easily. So when they do, its forever. You were his one-and-only. He wouldve loved and protected you until his last breath. You dont speak dog. Neither do I. The folks at the shelter do their very best, but havent yet figured out a way to explain to the abandoned why they are now behind bars. So Clutch was confused. At first, Im guessing he thought you were coming back. But you didnt. In his mind, none of us who tried to love him were as good as you. So eventually, he shut us out. He shut himself down. He gave up. We didnt give up on him. You may have been blithe about letting him go, but we refused to let him sink. Dedicated volunteers reached across snarling teeth and a stiff posture to offer affection. Determined employees ensured he got the best training and care they could offer. You turned your back on him a year ago come January. Hes still here. Hes still confused. Hes still scared. He still desperately wants you back. He would forgive you, Id bet money on it. If you walked through the shelter doors tomorrow, I bet hed wag his tail and lick your face. Thats what dogs do. Thing is, I know you arent coming back. And I dont forgive you. Ive held on to dogs through incontinence, severe anxiety, allergies, moves...you name it. Sometimes, it was really, really hard. But Id take a bullet for my furbabies. I guess you and I see the world differently. You see it through VERY narrow goggles. I hope I see it as wide as possible. Tomorrow, you will probably get up, stretch, take a shower, eat your breakfast...and not think about Clutch once. Tomorrow he will wake up, pace...and dream of you. My wish for you is that you learn empathy. My prayer for you is that you learn your lesson...however Karma sees fit.
