To the plutocrats who control the tea party from above, government truly is the enemy. But the average, grassroots tea party member likes the component parts of what government does: He or (less frequently) she likes government-run Medicare, government-built highways, and government-supported education, both higher and lower. This is the glaring weakness, the very weak link in the tea partys armor that Democrats can expose to greatly weaken the tea party hold on our political life. In my speech, I laid out the ways Democrats can exploit and expose that core weakness -- based on an exploration of how Democrats failed to stop its rise.
