Today 6 years ago John was admitted to EAMC after being told by a local GP (I have mentioned his name before)....He just has a virus, Kathy....take him home, let him rest and he will be fine. He pulled up some skin on his arm and said, See, Kathy, he is not even dehydrated. I said, NO....I am NOT taking him home--I want him admitted to EAMC NOW because I had to carry him into your office!!! His skin was a brownish grey, he was so VERY thin (you could see his ribs), throwing up and VERY lethargic. The doctors reply to me was....Well, if you insist..I do not think it is necessary though, Kathy. If I had taken him home based on his recommendation, John would not be with us today. Once we arrived at EAMC, we were surrounded by 10 or more nurses (I am NOT kidding), and several doctors of ALL sorts of specialties. The nurses told me he was SO dehydrated they could not get a vein to draw blood. They began ordering LOTS of tests and were REALLY scrambling. One of the doctors took me to the hallway and said, Mrs. Mitchell your husband is very sick we are going to do all we can do. First we were told he had lung cancer that had metastasized (spread) to his brain and throughout his body, then all sorts of types of cancer were mentioned (lymphoma, melanoma, etc...). After the OUTSTANDING persistence of Dr. Luis Zegada, Dr. Adahli Estrada Massey, Dr. Linda Farmer. Dr. Brandon Johnson, Dr. Lisenby and SEVERAL others he was transported by ambulance to Emory. Dr. Bruce Ribner (infectious disease) was SO impressed with the workup done at EAMC and RULED out ALL cancers and determined a final diagnosis of Disseminated Histoplasmosis, Adrenal Gland insufficiency, and blood clots. John is still VERY sick today and will ALWAYS need your prayers. I love this man and thank GOD daily for allowing him to remain with us. We are blessed!!
