Today I am greatly saddened by the loss of a woman who was largely instrumental in forging who I am today as a person. My Grandmother of 96 yrs passed away this morning peacefully. Ruby Blanchard was an awesome lady !! Often we leave an impact on others without even realizing the difference we make. My grandma taught me life-changing lessons, lessons I learned by watching how she lived her life and the actions she took. Actions speak louder than words, always. And my grandma was a true representation of that. The funny thing about death is that it ultimately reminds you of all of the lessons that person taught you while they were living. How interesting it is that our brains capsulate these memories, and unleash them later on. First and foremost she taught me compassion . The Dalai Lama once said, If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion. His remarks capture the way that my grandmother lived her life and taught me to live mine via her actions. Secondly She taught me Love. My grandmother had enough love and nurturance to not only cherish her five children, but to also raise her grandchildren. She also reminded us to tell the ones you love that you love them because none of us are promised tomorrow. She sacrificed all of her personal time making sure we had clothes, food, and shelter. She would spend countless hours looking over us while my mother continued her education and would often shuttle her grandchildren to ball practice, school functions and many other things. All without the least amount of hesitation. Thirdly she taught me integrity. From her I learned that integrity is preserved if you mean what you say and keep your promises and If you cant due to circumstances beyond your control, explain to the person why you cant.. I can never remember a time in my life that she didnt deliver what she promised and if she did, Im sure it was due to circumstances out of her control. I also never knew her to harbor any animosity ( well maybe one or two deserving characters). but for the most part she would forgive and not harbor feelings of ill will or malice. She taught me to not speak ill of others or gossip and I truly believe these aforementioned things define Integrity. Lastly she taught me that honesty is paramount. I will be the the first to admit that I have not always lived by this virtue but the older I get I realize the importance of this and its detrimental effect on you as a person. Being honest isnt always easy, otherwise wed all do it all the time. She taught me that honesty is an important value because this behavior facilitates trusting relationships with others. You that personally knew my Grandmother can attest that these values are what defined her as a person. I am truly blessed to have had her in my life and be exposed to the great person that she was for many years! Love you Grandma!!!!!!!!!!
