Today I am thankful for... 1. My family, of course. Who make each other better people just by being who they are. I am so thankful that I have a family that is open, down to earth, and okay with just saying whatever the hell is on their minds. A few of my friends have a hard time relating to their families, and there is unspoken tension and an inability to say what they are really thinking around their families. Im so glad I can say things that they might not agree with, but know its okay to say them. Thanks you guys! 2. A Language Older Than Words, by Derrick Jensen, because I discovered it during a crisis time in my life and I needed a friend. Derricks books console my soul, as every time I read one I find within the pages a very beautiful writing of many of my own thoughts, that had often been leading me to think I was insane for thinking. Derrick has really helped me to not feel so alone with the way I see the world. https://goodreads/work/quotes/2070741-a-language-older-than-words amazon/A-Language-Older-Than-Words/dp/1931498555 3. My coffee, even though and especially because of the fact that it has a long chain of slavery, poverty, misuse of land and a giant carbon footprint behind it. One day I will give it up because of these elements as drinking coffee in the middle of Colorado is completely unsustainable. But for now, Im just thankful I have something yummy to wake up to. Originally, coffee farming was done in the shade of trees, which provided natural habitat for many animals and insects, roughly approximating the biodiversity of a natural forest.[18][19] These traditional farmers used compost of coffee pulp and excluded chemicals and fertilizers. They also typically cultivated bananas and fruit trees as shade for the coffee trees,[20] which provided additional income and food security. However, in the 1970s and 1980s, during the Green Revolution, the US Agency for International Development and other groups gave eighty million dollars to plantations in Latin America for advancements to go along with the general shift to technified agriculture.[21] These plantations replaced their shade grown techniques with sun cultivation techniques to increase yields, which in turn destroyed forests and biodiversity.
