Today I had a meeting at one of the most beautiful museums in the world, museum Meermanno in The Hague. This place is always worth the vistit, but especially now they’re having a big exhibition on birds, on show until the end of Christmas. meermanno.nl/index/-/p-2066 The exhibition is not just on birds in medieval manuscripts, but for medievalists there is a lot to enjoy. From a tenth-century illustrated medieval manuscript with illustrations of a partridge, through birds in the margins of Ghent-Bruges manuscripts, to eating herons for dinner. Unfortunately my favorite bird, the ortolan, is missing. This is a very small bird, that in banquets was used for Rôti Sans Pareil, a meaty dish consisting of 17 birds stuffed inside each other. The ortolan is a very small bird, and was one of the first to get in. Although it was and still is forbidden to prepare and eat them, Francois Mitterand ate ortolans for his last meal : npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5223077. And of course he ate them with a napkin over his head, chewing on the bones and swallowing the intestines in one gulp….
