Today I had the opportunity to represent Brooks School (where I now coach) and give a lecture to a group of 35, middle school aged students, at a hockey camp. It was pretty cool how receptive the kids were to the discussion. The topic was “Identity.” I handed out note cards and had each player write the sentence “I am a…..” I then asked them to fill in the blank. Mostly all of them wrote “I am a hockey player.” I then had them fill in the blank with 3 different things, but this time it had to be a trait, not an activity. Something like, “I am a hard worker” or “I am a good friend” etc. We talked about that your identity shouldn’t be something you do, but something that you are. That way, when faced with adversity, you can ask yourself, “What would a hard worker do, because that is my identity.” That mindset will help kids throughout their lives and make them better athletes, musicians, dancers or whatever activity they assume. They will be better teammates, more coach able and better leaders. I thought I would share this so that you all can work with the kids in your life on this issue.
