Today, I have been considering the question Can/Do people change and have come to this personal and most likely temporary conclusion: Its important to note that when I say change I dont mean trying new foods, or reading more. I also dont mean perception of the world. Ones perception should always be changing with new experiences. I mean reaction to stimuli. e.g. taking offense, being cynical, morality, thinking highly of ones self, remaining hopeful, happiness levels etc. Can people change? Yes. For the most part though, I dont think that people do. I think that its much easier, and therefore more common, to settle for whats easy than to put in effort in order to get somewhere else (somewhere that is not guaranteed to work out or to even be any better than current situations). I do not view this as negative. For example, I could currently take actions in a few fields of my life that would be seen as improvements in monetary, health, academic, and physical areas. I dont do these things (more importantly I dont have the drive to) and yet theyd be relatively easy to do consistently. I am happy where I am and dont feel as if the consistent effort, however insignificant, will outweigh the outcome. If for whatever reason I get the drive (therefore making it not as hard) to improve these areas without the effort outweighing the perceived outcome, then by all means I will change in that field of my life, but it is only when it becomes a desire and therefore less strenuous that these changes will ever happen. Its easy to work hard at something you love. After reading one might assume that one of my reactions to stimuli (as mentioned above) is that I dont work hard at things if they are too hard or if the perceived outcome doesnt outweigh the effort required. This may be true, and its hard to see myself changing anytime soon, therefore the conclusion remains that Im not going to change to which I link to my initial thesis that people in general dont change very often.
