Today I joined officials from throughout the nation in a dial-in-press conference in support of a New Education Declaration. During the call, a diverse group of leaders from across the country released a new “Education Declaration.” The document puts forward a strong critique of our nation’s current course on education. Moreover, by coming together around the Declaration the signers are demanding a new direction in public school policy, focused on opportunities and supports for students – and respect for teachers. Speakers on the call included John Jackson (Opportunity To Learn Campaign), Jeff Bryant (IAF and Education Opportunity Network), Robert Reich (former US Secretary of Labor), Rita Solnet (Parents Across America), and Linda Darling-Hammond (Stanford Center for Opportunity Policy in Education). “I am doing this because for many years I have seen the fiscal inequity that shortchanges school districts throughout America like Yonkers. If we had a better school funding formula in New York and more federal support, Yonkers would be able to afford universal full-day Pre-K, regular arts, music and sports programs that enrich the lives of our students and a good infrastructure where children can learn in a safe environment – all criteria that benefits the complete child and student – but sadly this is not the case. Until we prioritize education as our nation’s number one social imperative, we cannot reasonably expect to compete in a constantly evolving global economy and that places our national security at grave risk in the future." educationopportunitynetwork.org/special-edition-education-declaration-to-rebuild-america/1 #edudec
