Today I recall the story Umarani told me about how Baroma went to have her spiritual diksha from her Guruji Srimat Bholananda Giri Maharaj. From the book Bharater Sadhak we learn that Bholagiri Maharaj was an extremely handsome person, left home at an early age and performed his sadhana in the Himalayas. At Haridwar there is the main Ashram. About some minutes travel by rickshaw you can reach Bilkeswar Temple where the Sivalinga is installed and worshipped by him. Soon after her marriage Baromas mother took her in a hackney carriage, covered all over so that noone can peep from outside, I guess may be 1890s, to some devotees house where Bholagiri Maharjji has bee staying briefly and giving darshan. Baroma was just a kid. She felt she should have a flower garland in her hands since she was going to visit a sadhak. But there was no way one could acquire that. Suddenly a garland made of fresh fragrant flower fell in front of the coachman. Baromas mother was furious. She thought some riffraff (in Bengali Dyakra chonda) must be playing a prank to tease the passengers. She got the carriage stopped immediately, made the coachman search thoroughly and finally finding noone around left grumbling! Baroma was very happy to carry the garland to place at the feet of her Guruji. And what she noticed was really beyond any rational understanding. She found Bholagiri Maharjji was holding a small glass container in his hand which was filled with cashew nuts, to everyone who prostrated before him, he would very affectionately give a palmful of cashews and the container will instantly get filled again! He addressed in Hindi and was extremely charming and showered grace unsolicited. Later Baroma coined this phrase Amar Ishta Bhola [Siva], Guru Bhola, tai to amar mon bhola [I am of a detached mind as my cherished deity is Siva, who is so indifferent to worldly demanda and so is my Guruji].
