Today I received a mail from an esc.rec. fan from Ukraine who wanted to play the Creative Commons licensed releases in my catalogue as background music in his store. According to the CC license he is free to do so. But the collection agency overthere (the equivalent of the Dutch Buma/Stemra or maybe Sena), besides being corrupt, also does not recognise the CC license. This means that to avoid getting fined/taxed/whatever people in Ukraine need to be able to show a license contract if they want to play (CC licensed) music. Actually this took me somewhat by surprise. For me the point of using a CC license is to not be bothered by collection agencies and their wicked ways. Also I shouldnt have to spend time writing up individual license deals for stuff that is already permitted by the CC license. So. Has anybody heard similar stories? And why is the CC license not recognized in Ukraine? Is it just corruption or is it something else?
