Today I received this notification about human and canine cases: We are currently experiencing an uptick in mosquito-borne virus activity in Tennessee. We have reported in recent days a growing number of both West Nile encephalitis and La Crosse encephalitis cases. We are also observing a high number of positive tests in the mosquito batches sent to the state for testing of West Nile and La Crosse viruses. Fifteen percent of mosquito batches are positive for West Nile virus statewide and close to 60% are positive in Shelby County. We are therefore at a critical time (August and September) where it would be optimal to test patients for arboviral infection including West Nile and La Crosse encephalitis viruses).
