Today I sat in hospital with my father, besides the ward-bed of my step-brother Alex Ddumba Ny Ky. Three other relatives were around. Daddy had driven into the city from our village-home in Masaka when he received the news about the hospital admission for surgery to deal with appendicitis. He reassured and comforted us as he explained what the appendix is, how it may get ill, what the surgical procedure is like and what the removal does. He made us laugh as he explained complex biological processes with his fingers. He made comparisons between my own two caeserean sections as well his own surgery to fix an enlarged prostrate gland. It is a great asset to have a father who is a medical doctor. Although it was a sad moment, I was a child again, in the presence of my daddy. He made us feel safe with his words and his way. His eyes lit up every now and again. His mouth broke into smile between words. He made us laugh. He united us with his love. We were safe. We were one. We were all his. And in that hospital room, just before Alex was operated on, I knew again that my dad is the best dad in the world.
