Today I saw All is Lost, which I must say off the bat features a very risky proposition. It stars Robert Redford and.... no one else. Its set in the middle of the ocean, on a boat and the whole movie is watching Robert Redford trying to survive. We dont even know who the man in that boat is, we dont know his name, where he comes from, why hes out there, we just know hes fighting for his life in the middle of the ocean, and yet the film is all the more terrifying and moving for it. We rarely hear him speak, as we realize this is not a man who talks to himself when hes in a difficult situation. The film is ultimately a hopeful one, even though it forces its audience to face the very real possibility of death, and its even more poignant when we see it through the eyes of an actor to whom death must seem very concrete right about now (hes already over 80, though hes in tip-top shape and looks really good for someone his age). Its one of Redfords best performances, even though we never forget its him, he never loses the reality of the situation that JC Chandor (writer-director of Margin Call, a film I respect more than I love) has put him in the middle of. Its about man vs. nature and the very real possibility of staring death in the face. Well worth it....
