Today I took my nephews to the movies. The cinema has a few arcade-type games in the lobby, including The Claw. For 50 cents you can try to grab a little stuffed animal. I gave each of the boys $1.50 in quarters, and they took turns trying to snatch up a prize. Nine-year old John went first and came up empty. Seven-year old Arthur tried next and missed. John missed again on his second try. Arthur, who turns eight on Wednesday, scored big with his second set of quarters. He managed to pull up two stuffed animals! John was happy for Arthur, but I could tell by the expression on his face he was worried that he wouldn’t be so lucky. Arthur said, “I have enough stuffed animals. If you miss this time, I’ll give you my quarters so you can try again.” John was so grateful to his little brother. His eyes were full of hope as he popped his last quarters into the machine. He missed again. “Here you go, John,” said Arthur, handing over his last two quarters. John thanked him and dropped the quarters into the machine. The Claw came to life, and John snatched up a stuffed purple football. If you know John, you know that was exactly what he wanted. Arthur couldn’t have been happier if he had won the football. Those two brothers are the embodiment of kindness, compassion, and empathy. I keep telling my sister-in-law she needs to write a parenting book.
