Today I was all over the continent meeting with leaders and pastors...isnt technology wonderful? Days are never the same...every call is different. Although there are consistent themes, the particulars of each situation makes it wholly different. What is amazing is the heart of each of the leaders I met with today (like everyday)...filled with a desire to help the people they feel so responsible for. But ministry can be an odd endeavor. I liken it to helping someone get a cat out of a tree. The owner wants the cat out of the tree. You want the cat out of the tree. The cat wants to get out of the tree... ...this may all be true -- but there will still be blood-shed. And leaders have to find an incredible balance...they, themselves, must seek to grow spiritually daily. If theyre not growing and experiencing a deepening spiritual life, its hard to lead others. But they are also drowning in activities, meetings, programs, design, planning and conflict management. AND still maintain their deepening spiritual life. Sound tough?... Today we worked on building up leaders of diverse groups. We spent time discussing the inward disciplines. We talked about transition, guidance and hope. And we talked about identifying the Hand of God moving in one churchs midst, how to name it, share it, enjoy it...and prepare for what it will lead to. I talked to one pastor who recently resigned, one who is about to resign...and one who is seeing the incredible fruit of a ministry built well and cared for wonderfully. I dont know about them...but Im exhausted. Now to get ready to lead a workshop for leaders on the edge.
