Today, I was opportuned to be invited to the youth meeting of a political party. Only for me to find out that most YOUTHS that were there were men that are no less than 35 years old. Which brings me to the question, how then do we engage the youths in politics? The youths of today are what I call PASSIVE YOUTHS. We see a problem, we identify a problem but we do not seek to solve the problem. We are the ones who say that THIS person has held unto power for so long but we do not want to buck the trend. The only thing we do is how to slate these people on social media. That is the place where we find the majority of these youths. There is no physical participation whatsoever to confront this issue and become a part of the next generation of true Nigerian Leaders. Do not get me wrong. Social media is awesome. It has led to revolutions in various countries across the world. Barack Obama unleashed the power of social media during his presidential campaigns. Social media is great but it is one of the tools needed in todays world. We complain that old people are in political positions. How else will it be if all we do is hide behind the anonymous handle and insult people online. No one will come to your house and make you a senator or House of Assembly member. You have to come out for it. There is a saying that evil thrives not because of the actions of bad people but because of the silence of good people. Participate if you want to be heard. Which of the political parties do you fancy? Labour? APC? PDP? APGA? Look out for where the ward meetings and local government meetings are held. Attend them. It will not cost you a thing. You will be surprised that the leaders there are actually looking for young people to join them. If you do not come out, they will put in those that are available. Crazy people have won elections. People who you are better than who have no idea whatsoever have won elections. People have spent almost nothing to win major elections. Why? It is because there is a dearth of quality people in that area. Go out there and participate and stop being a town crier. The status quo will remain the same if we, the youths, do not act now. DECIDE TO PARTICIPATE. 2015 is here. We need to grab the bull by the horns. The future starts now. SEIZE IT!
