Today I watched Julian in the shower as he took different colored soap crayons and drew shapes, calling them names like right, acute, obtuse, and isosceles triangles. He asked for my help when drawing stars.. and even though I only knew how to draw a five point one, he still was telling me the stars of polygons, pentagons, hexagrams and enneagrams. Hes been watching the same What Shape Is It? over and over for a couple days. So in between him talking about Angry Birds Star Wars and shapes non-stop... and me painting and listening to music for hours with no conversation, I thought I might be losing my mind today. No real reciprocation, you know? When he got out of the shower I wanted him to put on his new Autism Awareness shirt but he refused and thats his new thing... no shirts that have to go on over wet hair. So we got out the hair dryer out... I asked him if he wanted to try and hold it himself but he wasnt ready for that and we also kept it on a low setting so the sound wasnt too overwhelming. After he was satisfied that his hair was dry enough, he put on his shirt and came out to the living room. I watched as he went over to the coffee table and pick up the Shel Silverstein book Where the Sidewalk Ends. I tried to hide my excitement. Although Julian can read many things way above what you would consider age appropriate, getting him to engage himself in books just doesnt happen. He doesnt sit still long enough to put all the sentences and words together before he jumps to a different activity. I didnt say a word and walked to the kitchen sink when I heard him say,I know. Im going to read The Giving Tree instead...It has a lot of pages. Well, you let me know if you want my help, I told him. He read most of it until he got to a page that had a lot of reading in dialogue between the tree and the boy. He looked at me,You can read this part. So, my heart grew and grew as we read the words, me of the tree, and Julian of the boy. When we finished, we said, THE END in unison and then Julian said,Hey, theres no words here on the back pages. It needs to say Directed by Us. Julian and Jamie. Got to hand it to that kid, he doesnt miss a beat and obviously knows where the credits should roll and how they should read at the end of a story. Hes my kind of perfect.
