Today Id like to wish my mother - Aunt Lynn - Grandmother - Mrs Canino a happy 88th birthday! She is a survivor and a medical miracle in her eyes. After raising the 6 of us, burying my father 34 years ago and grandmothering 7 young ones - 3 college grads, my mother survived a heart attack, open heart surgery and a replacement of an aortic stenosis. But her story started back in the 20s when she and her 3 older sisters lost their mother to an appendicitis attack, were almost placed in an orphanage, but immediately ushered into a household of loving, caring old maid aunts and bachelorette uncles. Each sister was tutored by an individual aunt all under the rule of the matriarch of the group, a well - educated and travelled high school principle, our great Aunt Agnes. Aunt Agnes or Ag the Nag as the sisters nicknamed her, made sure they were well fed, educated and married off to proper families. My mother, the youngest was wisked away from her home town to St. Lou to raise us rascally kids in the boondocks of SoCo. I loved it and enjoyed raising my children close by. Mom has been living in an assisted living facility in Fenton for the last 10 years, talking to everyone in the radius around her, introducing us old kids, and patting the hands of the poor souls she meets in the hall. Her influence ripples through our family as she regales what Aunt Agnes would say, but like her aunt a heck of a card player and conversationalist on any subject. We kids have always admired our mother raising the 6 of us without the influence of a mother or father and we are very proud of her motivating our family forward, making sure we are educated, employed and prepared to live to 100, because she is our guinea pig according to her. Please say Hello to my mother and if she is asked, shell give you her Phyllis Diller rendition, tell you of her tap dancing performances, and invite you to play a mean game of gin rummy or crazy 8s!
