Today Im sharing two pics from the Falklands/SouthGeorgia/Antarctica trip because to me they represent two sides of a situation. I found it haunting when we visited Gryvitken, a former whaling station where vast numbers of whales were slaughtered. Its been shut down for 50 years now but the remnants and perhaps ghosts, remain, rusted and a sad testimonial to human impact on nature. I came across a decaying remnant of a whale bone at another former whaling station and was able to photograph it closeup to use as a texture. Ive applied it in one way to an image taken at Gryvitken that shows the seals and wildlife trying to reclaim the area. Ive tried to use the texture here to honor the memory of the whales. But in the other image Ive used the very same texture applied in a different way to give an impression of snow and life. Knowing that people tend to look at pretty pictures first, Im presenting the prettier one first. I hope people will look at both.
