Today Ive eaten responsibly and even took part in a three hour rotating Badminton session. Honest to God exercise. Now for third day impressions. Visually Bangkok is like a jungle with a city built between the trees. Tropical plants are everywhere, both planted and pushing up defiantly wherever they can as if theyre trying to force a tired metaphor about cities being jungles into literal territory. The people here are mostly friendly although like any city you have to beware con men and scams. Mostly involving transport. Easily avoided by not getting in a cab you didnt hail yourself. Tuk Tuk drivers will offer a lift mostly just to get business, but Ive been warned about cases of people being taken to better destinations and shops the driver gets commission for. Tuk Tuks are expensive anyway and the licensed meter taxis have glorious air conditioning. On the subject of cost, many things here are around a quarter of what you pay in the UK and elsewhere. 500 ml bottle of drink is literally around 25p with water being even less. Taxi fares rarely break the £3 mark and bike taxis are about 20p for a short trip (which is all Im prepared to take on one as they zip through traffic like it aint no thing. Theyre great for getting up and down the relatively slow traffic and lengthy side streets though. Bikes are a viable family vehicle here it seems and youll often see parents with small children standing on the seat in the slow streets (I have yet to witness this in the central avenues) Food is EVERYWHERE and this is not an exaggeration. The only things stopping me from going crazy is the excessive heat (food is dehydrating) and the fact that Im unsure what most of it is and as its largely from open air stands its hard to get a good smell. Still it wouldnt break the bank to try something I guess. Its still possible to have an expensive time in Bangkok as it still has its fair share of high end Italian restaurants and fast food joints for the unadventurous. Also I saw a city centre luxury apartment advertised for around 2 million pounds. Some things dont change too much from country to country.
