Today, a final “Godspeed” to a great American…In the midst of all the manufactured crises in the news, you might have overlooked the obituary for Scott Carpenter, who died last week at 88. But we should all stop and think about what Scott Carpenter represented. He was one of the original Mercury 7 astronauts who took the first steps outside the bounds of Earth that would lead to a man walking on the moon just seven years later. Today, the government needs more than three years just to build a website. In 1962, Carpenter became the second American ever to orbit the Earth. Today, a space station seems almost commonplace. But back then, it took unbelievable courage to blast off on a giant tower of rocket fuel, strapped into a tiny tin can with less computing power than today’s smartphones. With his bravery and skill, his can-do attitude and pioneering spirit, Scott Carpenter was one of a special group of heroes who inspired America and the world. And that’s a story we all sorely need to be reminded of today.
