Today and yesterday were just plain forewing cold and miserable. I am upset yesterday I did not do a walk through in the cows and missed a calf born and it died. Mom was tucked behind other cows and I missed her til I fed cows and then it was too late. I am upset with myself for not checking closer. Today I checked one the boy born two days ago. He will definetly lose part of his ears but I finally managed to get mom to let him suck and when I checked again before leaving he was slurping loudly and mom came back for him so hoping hell be okay with being out overnight again. Have a sickly acting older calf to be medicated as well. Had to go up and feed two round bales up on the hill which wasnt fun because the heater in the skid steer stopped working today so was very cold and no way to keep warm. Walked through the girls and checked all I think for udders filling. Walked three that are progressing into the pen so they can calve where theres hay and a barn. As I was feeding cows I was unrolling the hay and caught a smell of summer. The waft of the perfume of summer that special smell of cut grass mixed with the sweetness of alfalfa blossom. Its neat to unroll a bales of hay that is beautiful green and the clover flowers are still yellow the alfalfa is purple. Better still when its hay thats two years old. Those moments remind me of summer and all the hard work but also the days spent out in the sunshine. Fed all the animals. I feel Im going to have to start worming the alpacas as Im concerned about weight on a couple. Was nice to feed the critters on hill with all the goats penned up as it went much more simply. Got home and begin puzzling out a possible round twine rug and am weighing up a fleece for a customer supposed to be in the teens tommorrow wish that felt warm but not so much :).
