Today, four years ago Michael Been passed away. I had the privilege to meet, see him play live, talk with him and the rest of the members of The Call a few times in my life. Once in Springfield Missouri off the Let The Day Begin Tour, once with Michael doing a solo acoustic tour with Harry Dean Stanton and once off the To Heaven and Back tour in Kansas City. But the other time was my most cherished of them all. I drove, with my wife at the time, from New Jersey all the way to Norfolk Virginia in one day to see them play at a little place called The Boathouse. When the band found out we drove about 6 1/2 hours to see them...they wanted to meet us. Michael was a pleasure to talk with...he had such a grace and kindness about him. At one time in my life I was interested in playing bass, because of his absolute signature sound (it was magical to hear and watch him play that fretless Ampeg) and I told him this. He smiled at me while I was talking to him and once I was finished he took one of his bass picks out of his pocket and gave it to me. A memory Ill never forget.
