Today in 1948: Ivory Joe Hunter, the Baron of the Boogie, hits #1 - TopicsExpress

Today in 1948: Ivory Joe Hunter, the Baron of the Boogie, hits #1 on the Billboard R&B chart with "Pretty Mama Blues", a single on Four Star Records. The hit would be one of many examples of the musical output Ivory Joe created, which transgressed from R&B to blues, boogie-woogie, and country. The Kirbyville, TX-born "Happiest Man Alive" (whose legitimate birthname was, indeed, Ivory Joe Hunter, not a stage name) would soon make a name for himself in all of these musical categories, which would earn him unique dual honors from the Monterey Jazz Festival and the Grand Ole Opry.
