Today in Cape Canaveral history: 25 August 1909: The Canaveral school house was blown off its foundation by a heavy wind. Lightning struck a palmetto tree at Capt. Wilson’s dock about 6 o’clock Sunday morning, shattering a mast that was leaning against it, throwing the mast about thirty feet and so completely demolished the steel wire stay that not a piece of it could be found. The lightning made furrows several feet long where it entered the ground, and threw dirt, branches and trash 30 or 40 feet in all directions. This is the second bolt that has struck the captain’s place in two weeks. The other killed a large umbrella tree about twenty feet from his house. At this time little balls of fire were seen darting all around the porch. – Florida Star
