Today in Delaware History 1651 Peter Stuyvesant, Dutch Director of New Netherland, sent a fleet of 11 ships to New Castle along with 120 soldiers overland and wrested control of the Delaware River from the Swedes. 1933 A hurricane hit the East Coast causing severe flooding all along the Chesapeake Bay as winds of 75 MPH lashed the state. In Laurel a dam burst inundating vast areas after 17inches of rain fell in less than three days. Basin Road in New Castle was all under water.
