Today in Hampton History 1607 – The most recent group of English settlers in the New World, under the command of Capt. Christopher Newport, arrive off Point Comfort in the ships Susan Constant, Discovery, and Godspeed. They spend several days with the Kecoughtan Indians, then reboard their vessels to sail up the James River. As they are instructed, they go 30 miles upriver for defensive purposes. They settle on an island and erect a village which they name Jamestown, after their sovereign, James I of England.
