Today in History: On October 17, 1979 Mother Teresa (Agnes Bojaxhiu) was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for founding the Missionaries of Charity, a Roman Catholic religious congregation, which today consists of over 4,500 sisters and is active in 133 countries. They run hospices and homes for people with HIV/AIDS, leprosy and tuberculosis; soup kitchens; childrens and family counseling programs; orphanages; and schools. Because of her Christian faith and work with the poor, she was one of the most respected and admired women of the twentieth century. On September 10 1946, Teresa experienced what she would later describe as the call within the call (since she was already a nun at the time) while travelling by train to the Loreto convent in Darjeeling from Calcutta for her annual retreat. “I was to leave the convent and help the poor while living among them. It was an order. To fail would have been to break the faith.” And the rest, as they say, is history.
