Today is Cyprus Independence day. I want to take this opportunity to express as an independent person, not as a Cypriot, that i am very proud of Cyprus as a country . It is so small and yet has been sought after throughout its history of existence. Many battles by various countries have been fought in a bid to own it...it has been occupied by the French, the British, the Egyptians, the Persians.....it is an island whose people have seen first hand suffering and pain resulting from an invasion in 1974 ...an island so small and yet it has been forcefully split into two. An island where, to this very day, attempts to take advantage of it continue to be made by more powerful countries. And yet ... Cyprus has fought with passion to maintain its independence and that can only be seen as admirable from such a small country that, not too long ago, was not even recognised by many as being on the map.
