Today is International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, an issue that is very painful in Syria. At the beginning of the revolution, youth and women got up not only against the regime, but even against some obsolete and conservative habits that were outdated since the society has changed a lot while widespread patriarcal mentality needs more time to change. After almost 4 years, siryan society have seen a huge set back for rights of everibody, starting from women and children. Now their rights are passed into the background, as something to think about after the fall of the regime. Rape is used as a weapon of war against males and females, but while a man who had been abused will be considered like a hero, a fighter, if he manage to go out from detention, a female will not be accepted by her own family, will be socialy death. In many liberated areas islamic militias (Im not speaking about Daesh barbarians) are trying to impose dressing codes or other moral rules that affect mainly women, and even normal people are going back to old habits in order to strengthen their identity, because the increasing sectarian taste in this revolution that had been kidnapped by a civil war. So today I would like to ask our brothers, sisters and comrades that are fighting for freedom of Syria to pay attention: we have to try not to see women as weak individuals, but as equal subjects. We have to be before anyone else to defend the role of women in our struggle, they are co-stars not extras or our assistants.
