Today is New Years Eve and I should be celebrating the coming in of the New Year. In fact I am celebrating in the peace and quiet of my own home. No bars or guards. This time last year I was on my way to Egypt and was arrested at Cairo airport then held in custody for 12 hours. It was the penalty to be paid at the time for being the Head of the a foreign funded NGO and speaking out about the Rabaa Square murders. NGO leaders were thought of as people of influence (so I am told) and were either imprisoned or deported. Fortunately I was one of the lucky ones and was sent back to the UK. Throughout the year many other people far more notable and courageous than I am have been in the same situation. The AJ reporters and thousands of others are still rotting in Egyptian prisons. I am thankful that I am not one of them. Happy New Year everyone.
