Today is November 22nd the 50th anniversary of the death of John F. Kennedy, many people who were not born during the era do not understand the long lasting hold that this president has on people of my generation. I remember shaking his hand when he first came to El Paso, and thinking I had just touched greatness, I was about 14yrs old at the time. I also remember being 16yrs old and walking to my next class, and my friend Ben Garcia stopping me and telling me that someone had just shot the president of the United States,,,,,I told him he was lying and it wasnt funny. Unfortunately when I got into class, it became tragically apparent, that he wasnt lying. We were sent home early that day......I stopped at my local church to pray. I could not comprehend or take in, what just had happened. I finally got home and spent the next 4days watching history unfold on TV. I watch the unbelievable played out over and over on a black and white screen. Desparately trying to make sense of a world no longer feeling safe. He died and past on to history....some will remember him with cynism, Some will remember him as a star shining over head. Make no mistake about him he was only human, with flaws and personal problems, but he was our president, a man of with wit, charm and intelligence. I dont write history, I leave that to the scholars and the politicos, I just remember shaking his hand and watching him die.
