Today is a very emotional day for me.. 4 years ago today Daniel underwent occipital cervical fusion (fused skull to c3). He also had a brain decompression revision (the first brain surgery failed) and a rib graft. (Rib was used in his fusion). This was a life saving surgery.. I know he would not be here today if it werent for the incredible skill and experience of his neurosurgeon Dr Fraser Henderson and the loving guidance of an angel who lead me to him, Pamela Taylor Fenner. Daniels diagnosis was cranio-cervical instability (severe), basilar invagination (his odontoid bone pushed into his brainstem 3mm) & chiari 12mm. These conditions caused by Ehlers Danlos Syndrome Marfanoid Habitus were causing many serious concerns which were slowly sucking the life out of him. This surgery was pivotal in giving him quality of life and returning his purpose in life. Hes a warrior with a purpose Dr H said. Sadly Daniel is not unique, so many like him. Some have sadly not survived because there are SO few true experts in the world. (Can literally count them on one hand). I will never forget the day Dr H walked him for the first time. Daniel cried after. I told him how sorry I was that it hurt, he replied saying that thats not why he was crying.. It was because the pain he had felt for a year was gone.. Now I was crying. These photos reflect various times in his journey. One showing how thin and sickly he became before the surgery. Another from his Make A Wish trip to Atlantis. The one showing his scar always makes me smile.. Not because of what he has endured but because his hair grew back in the shape of a cross.. (It was not shaved that way). God has and always will be with him and this clearly reflected it. I am forever grateful to have gotten him the proper care he needed and so glad I never gave up or gave in to those who questioned us.. His smile now, which was gone for so long, is living proof! I am so proud of my son and humbled by his unmeasurable bravery..
