Today is the 35th anniversary of my arrival in Canada as a deserter from the US Army, which was then involved in a campaign of death and destruction against the people of Viet Nam Today is also a sad day in which some of the people I most love are departing Canada under pressure from the Harper Government, pressure they endured for many years while making a huge contribution to this country. The war resisters, and the War Resisters Support Campaign have been an obstacle to the Harper plan of remaking Canada from a peace loving cooperative nation (when at its best) into a fake warrior society in which a tiny portion of the population faces the dangers of war, while the rest root for them and then forget about them. The solution to this problem is to dump the Harperites in the next election and push the new government to Stop the Deportations and make it possible for the war resisters to stay in Canada if they so choose. In the meantime, as I look back on my 45 years in Canada, Im deeply grateful for the opportunity to become a Canadian, and Im deeply grateful to the war resisters for calling on us, with humility, courage, and decency, to uphold our best traditions and values.
