Today is the Anniversary of the American with Disabilities Act. More than 43 million Americans (one in five) have physical and mental disabilities. For many people with disabilities, everyday activities such as working, using public transportation, and accessing stores, restaurants and public facilities can present difficulties. Historically, persons with disabilities have been forced into dependency. Others would speak for them, label them, and take care of them although often with the best of intentions. In 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act provided comprehensive civil rights protection for people with disabilities and updates to this act took effect in 2011. Under the ADA, an individual with a disability is a person with a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities, a person who is regarded as having such an impairment, or has a history of such an impairment. A broad range of disabilities are covered including epilepsy, cardiac disease, AIDS, mental illness, arthritis, and learning disabilities. July marks the 23rd Anniversary of the passing of the Americans for Disabilities (ADA) Act. Persons with disabilities and one guest are invited to attend a free ADA Celebration event celebrating the progress made through implementation of the ADA.
