Today is the anniversary when Australian soldiers sailed off to - TopicsExpress

Today is the anniversary when Australian soldiers sailed off to Gallipoli, to a bloody baptism where 8,709 would be killed in Australias most disastrous defeat. All up, 61,000 Australian men were slaughtered out of a population of less than 5 million. The ill-fated fleet boasted 38 ships with 30,000 troops as well 7,000 horses from the Light Horse Brigade. THE FOLLOWING AUSTRALIAN SONG IS BEAUTIFUL: https://youtube/watch?v=E22gszljklc Ive been to Gallipoli. Driving up the long road toward the battle site on the beach at Lone Pine, where thousands of Australians were slaughtered as they left the ships and were forced to run up onto the beach into full gun fire, I was unexpectedly overcome with emotion. I later stood on the beach and looked at what a ridiculous set-up the situation was, and wondered: why? When you see the tombstones at Lone Pine, many of the Australian soldiers were only 16 years old. They were boys. Its almost impossible for anyone to visit Lone Pine and not shed a tear. Ive been into many concentration camps in different countries and seen many brutal things, but Gallipolis Lone Pine, Turkey, is chilling.
